Why does my power keep tripping?
By South West Tech
If your power keeps tripping, it's usually a sign that your electrical system is detecting a fault and shutting the power off to keep you safe.
While an occasional trip can happen, repeated tripping shouldn't be ignored.
Common causes include overloaded circuits, faulty appliances, damaged wiring, faulty safety switches or circuit breakers, or electrical faults caused by moisture. Simply resetting the breaker may restore power temporarily, but if it trips again, the underlying issue still needs to be identified.
How Can I Find the Cause?
A good first step is to unplug any recently connected appliances and try resetting the circuit breaker. If the power stays on, one of the appliances may be faulty. If the breaker trips again with everything unplugged, the fault is more likely to be within the home's electrical system.
You should also take note of whether it's one circuit that's tripping or the entire property, as this can help narrow down the cause.
When Should I Call an Electrician?
If your power continues to trip, don't keep resetting the breaker. Frequent tripping is a sign that something isn't operating correctly and could become a safety hazard if left unresolved.
A licensed electrician can safely test your electrical system, identify the cause of the fault and carry out any necessary repairs to restore reliable, safe operation.
