Why do my lights keep flickering?

By South West Tech

When Should You Be Concerned?

Occasionally, a flickering light is nothing to worry about—it could simply be a loose light bulb or a faulty LED globe. However, if multiple lights are flickering throughout your home or the problem keeps happening, it may indicate an electrical issue that should be investigated.

Common causes include loose electrical connections, overloaded circuits, voltage fluctuations, a faulty switch, or problems within your switchboard. In some cases, the issue may even originate from the electricity network supplying your property.

You should arrange for an electrician to inspect the problem if:

  • Multiple lights are flickering throughout the house.

  • Lights dim when appliances like air conditioners or pumps start.

  • Circuit breakers are tripping.

  • You notice buzzing sounds, burning smells or warm power points.

  • The flickering is becoming more frequent.

Electrical faults can worsen over time, so it's best not to ignore persistent flickering.

Can I Fix It Myself?

If the issue is limited to a single light fitting, try replacing the globe first and ensuring it's fitted securely.

If the flickering continues or affects multiple lights or circuits, it's safest to have the electrical system checked by a licensed electrician. They can identify the cause and ensure your home's electrical system is operating safely and reliably.
