How long do solar panels last?
By South West Tech
Solar panels are designed to last for decades.
In fact, most quality solar panels come with a 25-year performance warranty, but that doesn't mean they'll stop working after 25 years. Many continue producing electricity for 30 years or more, although their output gradually decreases over time.
This slow reduction in performance is known as degradation, and it's a normal part of a solar panel's lifespan.
Do Solar Panels Stop Working?
No.
Rather than suddenly failing, solar panels slowly become less efficient as they age.
Most manufacturers guarantee that after 25 years, their panels will still produce around 80–90% of their original output, depending on the brand and model.
This means that even after decades of use, your solar system should still be generating a significant amount of electricity for your home.
What Affects Their Lifespan?
Australia's climate can be tough, but modern solar panels are built to handle it.
Quality panels are tested to withstand:
High temperatures.
Heavy rain.
Strong winds.
Hail.
Years of exposure to harsh UV radiation.
Choosing high-quality panels and having them professionally installed can make a significant difference to how well your system performs over its lifetime.
While the panels themselves require very little maintenance, keeping them reasonably clean and ensuring they're free from heavy shading can help them continue operating efficiently.
What About the Inverter?
While solar panels often last 25 years or more, the inverter usually has a shorter lifespan.
Depending on the type and brand, most inverters last around 10 to 15 years, meaning they may need to be repaired or replaced at some point during the life of your solar system.
Fortunately, replacing an inverter is a normal part of owning a solar system and doesn't mean the panels themselves need replacing.
With quality equipment, proper installation and a little maintenance, a solar system is built to provide reliable, renewable energy for decades. While it's normal for performance to gradually decline over time, solar panels remain one of the longest-lasting home improvements available and can continue generating valuable electricity well beyond their warranty period.
