How do solar panels work?

Turning Sunshine Into Savings

Solar panels use energy from the sun to generate electricity that powers your home. It's a clean, renewable source of energy that can reduce your electricity bills and your reliance on the grid.

Despite the technology behind them, the process is surprisingly simple.

Capturing Energy From the Sun

Every solar panel is made up of dozens of solar cells. When sunlight reaches these cells, it causes tiny particles called electrons to move, creating an electrical current.

This is the first step in turning sunlight into usable electricity.

Converting Power for Your Home

The electricity produced by solar panels is called Direct Current (DC) electricity.

Your home, however, runs on Alternating Current (AC) electricity.

That's why every solar system includes an inverter. It converts the electricity produced by your panels into the type your home can safely use.

Powering Your Home First

One of the biggest misconceptions about solar is that it only reduces your bill after selling power back to the grid.

In reality, your home uses your solar electricity first. If your panels are producing enough power, appliances like your fridge, lights, television, pool pump and air conditioner can all run directly from the energy being generated on your roof.

The more electricity you use while the sun is shining, the greater your potential savings.

What Happens to Extra Solar Power?

If your solar system produces more electricity than your home needs, the excess energy doesn't go to waste.

It is exported back into the electricity grid, where your energy retailer may pay you a feed-in tariff, depending on your electricity plan.

If you have a battery installed, that excess energy can instead be stored for use later in the evening.

Do Solar Panels Work When It's Cloudy?

Yes.

Solar panels don't need direct sunshine, they simply need daylight.

They will continue producing electricity on cloudy days, although output is lower than during bright, sunny conditions.

What About At Night?

Solar panels stop generating electricity once the sun goes down.

At night, your home will either:

  • Draw electricity from the grid, or

  • Use stored energy from a solar battery, if one is installed.

Built to Last

Modern solar panels are designed to withstand Australia's harsh conditions, including heat, rain and hail.

Most quality panels are backed by 25-year performance warranties and continue producing electricity well beyond that.

With very little maintenance required, they're built to deliver reliable energy for decades.
